Mountain Biking

Summer in Fernie and mountain biking go hand in hand. As the snow melts, bikes of all shapes and sizes appear in droves on the streets and trails. The mountain biking here is plentiful and diverse, from family friendly flowy trails to technical cross country, downhill, and big-air flow trails.

Fernie Alpine Resort officially opens for the summer season. Things may look a little different, but they are working hard to bring you a great outdoor experience.

Local mountain bike coach Kat Robinson reminds us of the small things we can do before heading out for a ride to ensure our bike is in working order and ready for the trails ahead! This time of the year, as we all get into gear and more trails open up every day, these quick and easy checks can aid us in having a safe and mechanical-free ride.

A - air in your tires.

B - brakes

C - chain and gears

FIRST they roll over, camera-ready, each small change a delight of awe to a new parent. A thousand photos later and you’ve lost friends on Facebook but to you it is still magic. Then they start to scooch or crawl, eventually stand, then walk and in Fernie, they begin to climb, ski and bike. A natural progression. A marvel to witness. Infants and toddlers shift and change without resistance and without fear.

As we shift into a new season the Fernie Trails Alliance (FTA) is also moving into a new direction with hiring of a Trail Manager. This individual will be responsible for managing and coordinating volunteers, coordinating the inspection and maintenance of existing trails, managing budgets and providing weekly trail reports. This role is key to our trail network, as it will help us manage our volunteers more effectively, improve our reporting to funders and landowners and to the community at large.

Looking for a ride close to town this time of year? Cokato Road to Morrissey is a great option. A gravel bike is ideal for this ride but a mountain bike also works well.

As much as I love all of the seasons, spring holds a special place in my heart. A time of year that signifies new growth, fresh starts and warmer days. The magical time of year when for many, spending longer durations outside becomes possible.

The number of summer activities is on the rise in this beautiful Valley, drawing numerous people to our community with a substantial increase in summer tourism year after year.

It takes a lot of spirit to maintain our trail network. With over 300 kilometres of trails, we could not maintain and build our trails without the dedication of our volunteers.
