Fernie BC

There are so many extremely amazing trails in Fernie so picking a few favourites is difficult, but here are my top three winter trails and activities!

Elk Valley Nordic Centre –  Runt/Grunt – Nordic Skiing
Time: Approx. 1 hr (depending on the number of loops)
Distance: Approx.  7 - 10km
Level: Blue

The Elk Valley Nordic Centre is a real winter paradise. Tucked away in the Mount Fernie Provincial Park, the views are breathtaking. The Fernie Nordic Society has hired a paid groomer this year so the conditions have been prime time!

2020 has thrown everyone for a loop. Reinventing your business, learning to work from home, becoming a teacher to your kids… there is no wonder the word of the year is “pivot!” Dave Morrison is no exception. This February he was hired as the new CEO of Island Lake Lodge and made the move back to the mountain town he fell in love with, something he has been working towards the majority of his life.

Every Thursday, our Program Officer Jackie will be releasing a short Art History Lesson on The Arts Station Youtube Channel.

These videos are a short introduction to prolific artists, featuring someone new every week. We cover their biography, their artistic style, look at some of their works and then leave you with a challenge to get creative at the end of every video!

Videos launch every Thursday

Remember that science experiment, the one where a simple potato can produce enough electricity to power a light bulb? That is me in a nutshell. To light up, I need potatoes. I need friends, I need laughter, I need smiles and I need connection.

It's fun to shake your booty in Fernie, and with each year the booty-shaking opportunities only get better. Check out 2020's top three.

The Northern

There are so many great options at the hill, but of course we all have our favourites... some secret! These three received the top votes in 2020.

Snake Ridge

My extended family has always been a wordy bunch. In one memorable Scrabble game my grandfather—an editorial writer for the Calgary Herald, played ‘GRANGERS’ on a triple word score for 129 points in a single word. As the second wave of COVID constricts, our little household has been shoring up and looking for ways to pass the time together and still lounge on the couch. We’ve now entered a new phase of existence where we play games against each other online. On the couch. At the same time—the Hephers have now somewhat grudgingly stepped into the present.
