Opera: Dialogue des Carmelites at The Arts Station
Anne Sophie Schmidt, Hedwig Fassbender, Patricia Petibon. Conducted by Jan Latham-Koenig
Performed by Opéra national du Rhin, Strasbourg, France.
The opera tells the fictionalised story of the Martyrs of Compiegne – the Carmelite nuns who, in 1794 during the closing days of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, were systematically guillotined in Paris for refusing to renounce their vocation. This is a stunning and theatrically compelling insight in to faith. Poulenc wrote music and libretto after the work of the same name by novelist Georges Bernanos. French with English subtitles, 1999. Running time 2hr 36mins.
This is our last screening of the season, with a potluck buffet at 6, opera at 7.
