Movies, Museums and Meat Draws: Fernie’s Other Winter Wonderland

For certain there is an exponential amount of things to do in Fernie. When the leaves begin to fall from their trees with the changing season and the pathways are scattered with memories of summer long since gone, a sudden, often welcomed change occurs.

Comfy sweaters and warm boots replace shorts and sandals. Those of us trying to hold on to the last moments of summer take to the mountain bike trails, even when it starts to snow. And when we finally come to accept that the warmth of summer has been engulfed by the crisp, cold winds of a looming winter, we change what we do. We seek out different, sometimes inside-type things to do.

There is, by no means, a shortage of such things. It is only a matter of knowing where to find them.

If you’ve had a full day of fresh powder skiing and – perhaps new to Fernie – you aren’t fully aware of the relaxing activities this little mountain Shangri-La has to offer you, take yourself downtown to the historic Vogue Theatre (est. 1908) on Second Ave. There is nothing better than a bag of hot, buttered popcorn and a new movie on “cheap Tuesday” to complete a perfect wintery day. The Vogue’s upstairs arcade is also great for the kids and is like stepping back into the 1980s for some old-fashioned gaming.

Or, if you happen to be in town on the first Monday of the month from September to April, the Vogue Theatre plays host to Indie Films Fernie (IFF), a program of the local Arts Station. Unique and independent films selected based on good cinematography, acting and talent make for a Monday night delight.

If what you seek is a little bit of arts and culture be sure to head to The Arts Station on First Ave. Local, unique art and artists are featured in monthly exhibitions. This historic space, celebrating its 25th Anniversary in the fall of 2015, is also a popular spot for live music, theatre and numerous workshops in painting, textiles and pottery. Check their website at for current events and courses.

For anyone hoping for a run-through on Fernie history pay a visit to the Fernie Museum. Located in the original Home Bank building on Second Ave., the museum gives a great introduction to Fernie with its ongoing exhibit, This is Our Fernie, showing how Fernie has grown and transformed from a once small coal mining community to a multi-purpose valley, bustling and always full of excitement. The exhibit leads you through Fernie’s dramatic history and along the many events that have helped shape it.

If all you really want is some rest and relaxation, Fernie’s many yoga studios can bring you back to your own sense of wellness. Studios including the unique Castle on First and Essential Yoga offer a number of classes for all yogis. There is nothing better than a good stretch and a calming of the mind when things become just a little too hectic, or after a day of great skiing and outdoor adventuring. Leave feeling refreshed and at peace, ready to snuggle beneath a blanket with a good book afterwards.

You might want a change of pace from the typical workout at Fernie Alpine Resort too, in which case two local gyms Evolution Health and Fitness and Vitality Body & Mind are fantastic in helping Fernie folk stay fit. These gyms offer great classes to motivate you into your best shape – especially after all of those Christmas treats.

Or perhaps, in celebration of an epic day on the hill playing in snow, all you seek is an ice-cold beer at one of the local bars. Head to the Griz Bar – a local hot spot – at Fernie Alpine Resort and watch as those giant white flakes fall heavy on the mountain and you get excited for the next days’ riding. Find yourself conversing with local hooligans for a game of pool, or pair your Fernie beer with a plate of hot, cheesy nachos and you have yourself a finale to a flawless day.

Head into town for local trivia and jam nights at The Brickhouse and the Pub. DJ sets at the Northern and the Royal are guaranteed for a rowdy experience. Or for a truly authentic, country adventure head to the Fernie Hotel for their Friday night Meat Draw. Win a marinated steak, a rack of ribs or a roast and take in this local favourite Friday to-do.

Whatever the reason may be that you visit beautiful Fernie this winter, you have come to the right place – there is always a fresh line to ski, a beer to drink, and more fun than even the most ambitious can sometimes handle. Here’s hoping for a great season, one with exponential amounts of snow and lots of things to do.
