Kids’ Summer Guide to Fernie

With a growing number of families residing in and visiting Fernie, it’s no wonder the opportunities available to kids continues to grow with each year. Whether you are here for the weekend, or the entire summer, it’s worth looking into the plethora of activities available for your young ones. Music, art, adventure, gardening indoor and outdoor sports, there is literally something for everyone. Perhaps they will even discover something new about themselves and fall in love with a new hobby.

Arts

Art Safari Camp
Campers learn techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture and theatre. They will learn about new cultures and art history, and take part in the process of creating the puppets, props and scenery for an end of week performance/art show for family and friends. Under the Sea with You and Me July 7-8
For ages 5 – 8 years, explore the exotic world under the sea with all the colourful life through art and drama each day including indoor studio work, outdoor adventures and an Art Show and Drama Presentation for parents and friends at the week's end.

Canadian Voyageurs July 14-18
For ages 9 – 12, explore the adventures and unique history of Canada's early inhabitants and explorers. Play drama games, enjoy the mountain outdoors. Present an Art Show and act in a drama presentation at the end of the week for parents and friends.

Felting at the Arts Station
The Arts Station is hosting two felting workshops for kids this spring and summer. April 11 is Needle Felted Creates from 11am-2pm for ages 12-16. $35 including supplies. The second is Felted Pictures, held July 17 from 10am-12pm, for ages 6-10. $15 including supplies. www.theartsstation.com

Music

Violin and Ukulele Musical Adventure Camps
This July 27-31 the IDEAL Society in Jaffray is hosting a camp for ages 7 and up.

Each day begins with movement and postural classes to harness energy and enthusiasm, followed by violin and ukulele classes with varied formats. Pottery

Pre-School Pottery sessions for ages 3-6 run every Tuesday at the Fernie Arts Station June 30 to August 25 from 1-2:30pm. The pottery studio is the perfect place to take a break from the hot summer and spend time making art. $15/day including all supplies.

Biking

Fernie is a mountain biking destination, a sport that attracts all levels and types of riders including the younger population. Fortunately there are opportunities for your kids to get into the sport or advance their skill levels.

College of the Rockies – Level 1
A three-day program offering kids the opportunity to discover the fun of mountain biking and trail riding in a safe environment. $120. The beginners camp covers the skills of braking, gear shifting, cornering, climbing, descending, balancing, manoeuvring over and around obstacles, safety and trail etiquette. 9:3am-2:30pm with six programs offered in July and August, call 250-423-4691 to register.

College of the Rockies – Level 2
The intermediate camp is for those who have completed the beginner course and wish to perfect their skills. This includes introduction to wheel lifts, drops and dirt jumps and the chance to discover intermediate trails and practice skills. College of the Rockies - Mini Rippers
A one-day basic courses for the minis who know how to ride a bike. An introduction to the skills needed to take your bike from the sidewalk to the trails and dirt park safely. Learn riding positions, braking and cornering skills, balancing skills and manoeuvring around small obstacles. Must have pedals and handlebar brakes. Fridays, 9:30am-12:30pm. Fernie Alpine Resort- Kids Freeride Camps
Teaching kids the basic skills, helping them to gain confidence, ride steep lines and tackle challenging terrain Fernie Alpine Resort’s professional coaches. Fernie Flyers – Spring Mountain Bike Program       
In May and June, the Fernie Flyers cycling club hosts a spring mountain bike program. For all levels of riders, this program focuses on progressive skill development, instructional trail riding, safety and fun. Groups based upon ages and skills. www.fernieflyers.com

Golf

Gardening

Little Sprouts Program
Little Sprouts engages children (0-6) and caregivers in hands-on activities, stories, songs, crafts and games, and outdoor play. This weekly, free event runs Thursdays from 9:30-11:30 in July and August at the Community EcoGarden.

EcoCamp
A fun-filled week in July spent outdoors, where kids ages 5-10 are engaged in gardening, science, art, music, games, garden snacks and much more. Cost is $250 and the camp runs July 5-12, visit www.ecogarden.ca for more details.

Outdoor and Adventure

Elk River Alliance
The Elk River Alliance hosts an experiential summer day camp for youth ages 10-14 called Elk Watershed Discovery Camp. Activities include: hiking, biking, rafting, geocaching, canoeing, fishing, floating, wild yoga, water science and more. Camps run July 27-31 and August 10-14, and $200/participant. Judo, Arts & Leisure Camps

The IDEAL Society in Jaffray is once again hosting its popular camps this summer, July 6-10 for 5-6 years old, July 13-17 for ages 7 and up. Fernie School Aged Care
Providing eight weeks of full day (9am-5pm) summer camp! As a licensed camp, the staff is qualified ECEs with first aid and a lot of experience. Each week has a different theme, filled with crafts, games, field trips, water play and free play in their year-round class room.

Reading Club

This summer’s Reading Club at the Fernie Heritage Library is Build It! With seven weekly sub-themes including sci-fi, biography/journals, crafts, architectures, fantasy, games, and mystory. Running

Catch Me if You Can Running Camp is hosted by Georgia Fear, with all proceeds benefiting the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation. For ages 8-13, this camp teaches proper technique, training habits, recovery options, nutrition and of course fun. Soccer

Soccer Quest is BC Interior’s largest full time Soccer Company and is hosting its annual summer camp for ages 4-18 July 6-10 and August 24-28. Tennis

Fernie’s Tennis Club hosts a seven-week course of group lessons for children ages 3-13 this May and June throughout the week between 4-6pm at the James White tennis courts.
