Fernie Mountain Film Festival
The Fernie Ski Patrol let the cat out of the bag at the 5th Annual Fernie Mountain Film Festival with CARCA - a priceless short film by Adam Baily that highlights Steve Ruskay and his feline friends. The film won the coveted ‘Best of Locals Night’ on Thursday and took home $500. Several other Fernie residents were highlighted this year. Nic Genovese, an established filmmaker with an eye for natural beauty, showcased his ability to uniquely capture action on film. Dillon Siggers, his third submission to the festival, displayed massive growth in talent and an attention to detail in his short film. The Fernie public nominated Heiko and Linda Socher for the Fernie Mountain Culture Award. This award is given to a person or persons who have demonstrated long-term commitment in their contribution to mountain life in the Elk Valley.

The film line up included two feature films and a selection of shorts. The Edge of Never was shown Friday, telling the true story of skiing’s big mountain tribe – deeply interpersonal and moving, staying true to the roots and core values that define the culture of skiing. Saturday featured Crossing the Ditch. Two men, one treacherous ocean - crossing of the Tasman Sea by kayak!

FMFF is proud to offer a free filmmakers workshop this spring. FMFF would like to give back to the community and hopefully inspire new film making – stay tuned for details!
